PlayStation Summer Sale – Editor’s Choice!

August 1, 2016

Ben Mapp

The PlayStation Store is doing that summer thing again, quietly marking down half the games you meant to buy and then forgot. Here is the short list we would actually spend money on, not the hundred-tile mosaic Sony would prefer you scroll until your thumb gives up.

Rocket League is still the best “one more match” game on the system, and it is rude how often it turns up cheap. If you somehow do not own it, fix that before you fix anything else. Until Dawn is the other no-argument pick. It is a horror film you can ruin by being cocky, and it is perfect for a weekend where nobody wants to commit to an RPG.

If you like your games mean and short, raid the indie shelf instead of another open-world map. A three-hour story with a point of view will give you more to talk about than a sixty-hour checklist with a map-icon problem. We are tired of map icons. The sale will not cure that, but it can route around it.

For the bigger spend, look at whatever Uncharted or Batman collection is reduced and ignore the season pass unless you already know you want it. A discount is not a reason to pre-load add-ons you will not touch.

Set a limit before you open the store. That is the actual editor’s choice. The deals are real. So is the way a basket fills itself while you are only having a look. Buy two. Play them. Leave the rest for the winter sale, which will arrive before you have finished the first download.
