Cosplay With Me Because I’m Back

August 12, 2016

Jennifer Drewett

Right. I’m back, the glue gun is back, and the spare room looks like a costume shop lost a fight with a charity rail. If you have been waiting on this column, the hiatus is officially over. Cosplay With Me is a thing again.

The last few months disappeared into real life, which is rude of real life, because convention season does not pause while you sort your diary. I missed the making more than the posing. There is a particular quiet that turns up around midnight when the only problem in the world is whether the foam will take the paint.

This is not a tutorial and it is not a sermon about who is doing it properly. It is me building a kit, messing it up, and talking to anyone else who is trying to turn a screenshot into something you can wear on a train without losing a limb.

Harley is the obvious build this month, because you cannot walk through a geek site in August without tripping over her. I want the cartoon silhouette more than the film jacket. Baseball bat, dyed pigtails, a jacket that looks like it has opinions. If the mallet ends up too big for the venue, that is a problem for future me.

If you are coming back to the hobby after a gap, start smaller than your ego. One recognisable piece beats a half-finished armour build you swear you will finish on the hotel floor. I have done the hotel floor. The hotel floor always wins.

Drop a photo if you are making something this summer. I will be here, covered in sealant, pretending I meant for it to look like that.
